What is Corpus Christi?

Corpus Christi is a Latin phrase that means “Body of Christ.”

In the Catholic Church, Corpus Christi is a feast that celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist—that the bread and wine consecrated at Mass truly become the Body and Blood of Christ.

Why Is It Celebrated?

The feast was established to give special honor to the Eucharist outside of Holy Thursday. While Holy Thursday remembers the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper, Corpus Christi focuses specifically on adoration and thanksgiving for this great gift.

Biblical Foundation

Jesus said:

“This is my body, which will be given for you.” (Luke 22:19)

And:

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” (John 6:51)

The feast celebrates these words and the Church’s faith that Christ remains truly present in the Eucharist.

Many parishes celebrate with:

  • Eucharistic processions
  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
  • Benediction
  • Flower carpets and decorations
  • Public witness of faith

A Beautiful Reflection

The feast is not only about worshiping Christ in the Eucharist but also becoming what we receive. As Saint Augustine said:

“Be what you see; receive what you are.”

We receive the Body of Christ so that we may become the Body of Christ for the world—bringing His love, mercy, and presence wherever we go.

A simple way to understand Corpus Christi is:

Corpus Christi is the Church’s joyful proclamation that Jesus did not simply leave us a memory—He remains with us in the Eucharist.
