Satan’s Legal Right
A Reflection on Matthew 15:13
“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.” (Matthew 15:13)
From the beginning, God created humanity to belong to Him. Satan never owned us. Yet when sin entered the world, humanity came under the dominion of sin and death. In that sense, the devil gained a kind of claim or accusation against fallen humanity—not because he was our creator, but because sin separated us from God.
Jesus came to destroy that claim.
In today’s Gospel, He declares:
“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.”
Sin is not planted by the Father. Neither are lies, pride, hatred, or the dominion of the evil one. All of these are foreign to God’s plan and destined to be uprooted.
Through Baptism, the Father plants us in Christ. He uproots us from the kingdom of darkness and establishes us as His beloved children. The devil’s claim is broken—not because we have become strong enough to defeat him, but because we now belong to Jesus.
This is why Baptism matters. It is not simply a ritual washing. It is God’s declaration that “This one is Mine.”
The enemy may still tempt us. He may accuse us of our past. But he no longer has rightful dominion over a soul united to Christ.
The Christian life is about remaining rooted in what the Father has planted. Every confession renews baptismal grace. Every Eucharist strengthens the divine life within us. Every act of faith allows God’s planting to bear more fruit.
The devil’s strongest weapon is sin. Christ’s greatest victory is grace.
When the Father plants you in Christ, the enemy loses his claim. What God has planted belongs to God forever, unless we freely choose to turn away from Him.
That is the hope of the Gospel: we are no longer defined by what sin has done to us, but by what Christ has done for us.
