To be the salt of the earth and the light of the world is to share in Christ’s mission. This mission is really big and we are small so we find out that we are not able to do everything. We cannot make every bad thing good. Heal every hurt by ourselves. When we see that we are not strong enough we have to make a choice. We can. Try to do everything by ourselves and get sad because we are not good enough or we can trust God and let Him help us.
The Beatitudes teach us what to do. When it says “Blessed are the poor in spirit” it means that we know we need help. The person who wants to be salt and light has to trust God. When we are weak God can show us that He is strong.
So Christ’s call to be salt and light is really a call to trust Him completely. The mission is big because we need to learn that God is all we need. When we stop trying to do everything by ourselves and trust God His light shines through us. He does things that we could never do alone.
The mission of being salt and light is not about being able to do everything by ourselves. It is, about choosing to trust God alone.
