The Storm is Real. So Is Jesus

Faith in the Middle of the Storm

Faith is not pretending there is no storm.

Peter really is surrounded by wind and waves. The danger is real. The fear is real. The storm is real.

But faith is deciding what you will look at while the storm is real.

Peter begins to sink not because the storm suddenly becomes stronger, but because his eyes move from Jesus to the waves.

And this is where the Gospel touches our own lives.

We often think that peace will come when the storm disappears—when the problem is solved, the sickness is healed, the uncertainty is gone, or the situation finally makes sense.

But Jesus offers something deeper.

The disciples’ peace is not based upon the disappearance of the storm. Their peace is based upon recognizing who is in the storm with them.

Jesus does not say, “There is no storm.”

He says:

“Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.”

The storm may still be there.

But Jesus is there too.

And sometimes faith is simply this:

to keep looking at Jesus while the waves are still rising.
