When there was a need, Jesus showed His true skin as the Son of God. When there is a need, Christians are called to show their true skin as children of God.
In Matthew’s Gospel, the suffering crowds revealed the heart of Jesus. Seeing people who were lost and helpless, He was moved with compassion. The need did not create His love; it revealed it. Compassion flowed naturally because that is who He truly was.
Jesus then sends the apostles into the harvest. He does not want them merely to admire His compassion but to share it. The need that revealed the Son of God is now meant to reveal the children of God.
The same is true for us. Our deepest identity is often revealed not in what we say, but in how we respond when someone needs us. The hungry reveal our generosity, the lonely reveal our kindness, and the suffering reveal our capacity to love.
Whenever we encounter a need, we can ask: What is this revealing about me? For just as Jesus showed His true skin as the compassionate Son of God, Christians are called to show their true skin as children of a compassionate Father. Through our response, the world catches a glimpse of Christ Himself.
