Gospel: Matthew 8:5–17
“Only say the word.”
The centurion approaches Jesus with an unusual request. He does not ask Jesus to come to his house. Instead, he says, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Jesus marvels at his faith because the centurion trusts not in what he can see but in the power of Christ’s word.
This same prayer has become our own before receiving Holy Communion. Every Mass reminds us that healing begins not by our worthiness but by trusting in the Lord’s word.
The first reading from Lamentations portrays a people devastated by suffering, weeping over what has been lost. Yet even there, the prophet urges them: “Pour out your heart like water before the Lord.” God never despises a heart that honestly comes to Him in its pain.
Together, the readings teach a profound truth. We are invited to bring our wounds honestly before God, to trust His word even before we see the answer, and to believe that His healing often begins in the heart before it appears in our circumstances.
Faith is not believing that God will do exactly what we want. Faith is believing that His word is enough.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. Strengthen my faith to trust You even when I cannot yet see Your work. Teach me to pour out my heart before You and to rest in the certainty of Your love. Amen.
