St. Clare: Do Not Be Too Quick to Reject the Saints
It is easy to dismiss the saints because their holiness can make us uncomfortable. We may think their lives are too radical, too demanding, or simply unnecessary for us.
But if we reject the saints, we should ask ourselves: Am I certain that I have become holier than the example I am rejecting?
The demons are not afraid of the saints because the saints possess power apart from God. They fear them because the saints have surrendered themselves completely to Christ. Their holiness exposes what evil cannot tolerate: a heart that belongs entirely to God.
St. Clare reminds us that holiness is not about being impressive. It is about being completely Christ’s.
So before we dismiss the saints, perhaps we should pause and ask:
“What do they see in Christ that I have not yet learned to see?”
Sometimes the saint we are tempted to reject is precisely the saint who is inviting us to become more like Jesus.
