An expandable heart is one that allows God to stretch it beyond its comfort. It grows in compassion when it would rather judge. It learns forgiveness when it would rather cling to resentment. It embraces generosity when it prefers security. It welcomes change when it would rather remain comfortable and familiar. Every invitation of Christ stretches the heart so that it can hold more of His love.
The Gospel is never static. It is the living, ever-new presence of Christ, continually calling us to deeper conversion, wider mercy, stronger faith, and greater love. If we insist on remaining as we are, we become like old wineskins—rigid and unable to contain the abundant life Christ longs to pour into us. But when we surrender to the Holy Spirit, He gently enlarges our hearts, making them more capable of loving God and our neighbor.
This is also the calling of the Church. As we journey together in faith and mission, we are invited to cultivate expandable hearts—hearts that make room for those who are different, hearts that listen before judging, hearts that welcome rather than exclude, and hearts that remain open to the surprising ways God continues to work among His people.
An expandable heart does not change the Gospel to fit the world. Rather, it allows the Gospel to stretch and transform it until it begins to resemble the Heart of Christ. Only then can we truly receive the new wine of His Kingdom.
