It seems like an odd response. A paralytic is brought to Jesus because he cannot walk. Everyone expects a miracle of healing. Yet Jesus says something completely unexpected:
“Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”
Why speak of sin when the man’s greatest problem appears to be his paralysis?
Because Jesus sees beyond what everyone else sees. The crowd sees a broken body. Jesus sees a wounded soul. The friends want Him to restore the man’s legs. Jesus first restores his relationship with the Father.
We often come to God asking Him to change our circumstances—to remove our burdens, solve our problems, or heal our illnesses. But Christ knows that our deepest need is not always our most obvious one. He heals from the inside out.
Perhaps today, Jesus is inviting us to trust His priorities. Before He changes our situation, He wants to transform our hearts. The greatest miracle is not simply being able to walk again, but walking with God.
